Modern Slavery Policies

The United Kingdom’s Modern Slavery Act 2015 is a piece of legislation that was enacted to help combat modern slavery and human trafficking. This act aims to protect individuals who are at risk of being exploited, and to hold those who engage in such exploitation accountable for their actions The act requires certain organisations to produce an annual “modern slavery statement” that sets out the steps they have taken to ensure that there is no modern slavery or human trafficking in their operations and supply chains. This statement must be published on the organisation’s website, and must be signed by a director or equivalent officer.

What Else Does the Modern Slavery Act Cover?

The act also establishes a new independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, who is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the act and for providing guidance to organisations on how to comply with its provisions. The Commissioner also has the power to investigate allegations of modern slavery and to bring criminal proceedings against those who are found to be engaging in such activities. The Modern Slavery Act 2015 applies to organisations that carry on a business or part of a business in the United Kingdom. This means that a wide range of businesses, including large corporations and public sector organisations, are required to comply with the act. In addition to requiring organisations to produce modern slavery statements, the act also strengthens the powers of law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute cases of modern slavery and human trafficking. It also introduces new measures to protect and support victims of these crimes, including the creation of a new Independent Child Trafficking Advocates service to support child victims of trafficking.

How Does the Modern Slavery Act Assist Organisations?

Overall, the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 is an important step in the fight against modern slavery and human trafficking. By requiring organisations to take steps to ensure that their operations and supply chains are free from these practices, and by strengthening the powers of law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute those who engage in these crimes, the act aims to help protect individuals from exploitation and to hold those who engage in such exploitation accountable for their actions.
